Mystery Mouse

While I was out in the garden this morning I saw a mystery mouse cadaver.

I’m not sure whether it was a a mouse or a rat, an Australian native or the so-called exotic whose ancestry belongs somewhere else.

It looked very peaceful – I originally thought it was asleep, aside from the fact you don’t usually see them snoring on the paths.

Or sleeping with their eyes open.

Clearly beyond medical care.

When you see them on the paths, they’re usually scuttling away.

I haven’t weeded the paths since the renovation work finished, so it was “sleeping” on a small patch of grass.

Which was kind of sweet, and an appropriate place for a sky burial.

The mystery mouse didn’t have any chunks missing, and it hadn’t been there long enough for bugs to have eaten any of it, so the most likely explanation was a bird dropped it.

Perhaps for a bit of pre-digestion.

Or maybe it got into a bit of a bird fight.

If the mystery mouse had been in a different location, I would’ve left it there in case the bird came back for it later.

Or perhaps some other hungry bird.

But it was an unfortunate location to let a corpse, so it went into the bin.

Mourned for a short time, before the rest of the day caught up with me.
