I recently had a transplant rejection scare. There are no words to describe how dismal waiting is when you’re having health investigations, and you feel like your life is running out of time. We can’t all be cats with nine lives.

You’re waiting for appointments, waiting for procedures, waiting for permission to go home, waiting for results. Returning a missed call, leaving a message and waiting for them to call back. Missing the return call, calling back to leave another message, and waiting for another call.

It’s like the unbearable silence, but you’ve more than enough time to imagine the entire range of worst possible outcomes.

I don’t have the words to describe how happy I was to hear that the transplant is well. I don’t even care that I don’t know what the problem is – my kidney lives on.

And my desire to live a life worth living has returned with a vengeance.
