In the interests of openness, here’s some information about my use of Artifical Intelligence.

This AI policy is effective from 28 October 2025.

Background

To recap my post Artificial Intelligence, algorithms and me, Artifical Intelligence is a technology that enables computers to take care of tasks people would normally do.

It can be narrow (e.g., reviewing medical scans for anomalies), or general, (capable of doing any human task).

And ther’s a theoretical superintelligent model that can surpass humans, ร  la The Terminatorโ€™s Skynet.

AI is trained, by feeding it masses and masses of data. The more data the better*.

And once your AI has gobbled up all the data, it follows a “recipe” in the form of an algorithm to output the data.

Algorithms are not AI.

* And in case you missed it, the major AI development companies such as OpenAI, Microsoft, Anthropic, Google, Nvidia, Perplexity, Salesforce, Apple (and so many more) are facing legal challenges over using coprighted work without permission or payment.

Purpose

This AI Policy sets out my principles for responsible and most importantly, ethical use of AI systems in my business.

Scope

This AI Policy applies to myself, and any employees or contactors I engage.

It includes all AI technologies under my control including those embedded within larger software platforms and systems.

Including

  • machine learning models
  • generative AI tools
  • predictive analytic systems
  • chatbots that generate their own responses.

Excluding

  • standard spreadsheet formulas
  • algorithmic editing software
  • rule-based automations (such as โ€˜ifโ€“thenโ€™ macros)
  • traditional business intelligence dashboards

AI Policy statements

AI will not be used for creative purposes, excepting critical reviews and certain other non-commercial uses. It will not be used to generate words, images or music for use in books, blog posts, or marketing materials. Efforts will be made to ensure images and music are purchased from creators, not AI generators.

AI will not be used to collect customer or process customer data.

Should an AI system be used for other non-creative purposes, ideally, the system would (because we all know it’s not right now):

  1. consist of artistic work which is licensed and credited.
  2. adequately represent gender, sexuality, colour and regional differences, and not lead to discrimination.
  3. be housed in a low power and water data centre that makes some effort to mitigate impact on climate change.
  4. take a human first approach
  5. not store conversations, input for further training.
